SYZYGY: A Treasury of Space Explorations from the Tessellated Pavement, Tasman Peninsula.
Digital photos, 2008, 50 x 50 cm each
These planets were discovered while exploring the Tasman Peninsula in January 2008 and comprise part of a greater constellation of planets derived from the Tasmanian environment. Eyes wide with the joy of encountering wonderful new places, I have discovered an intimate galaxy, a treasury of tiny precious planets.
The lens reforms the boundary between earth and sky and wraps the horizon around me, locating me like a child in the centre of my universe. Photographically I have transformed microcosms into whole and complex planets. By focussing the viewer’s attention I present each new terrain for close scrutiny.
I ask the viewer to consider both the sheer magnificence and finite character of the natural world. It is so easy for humans to dominate the landscape but much more rewarding to show reverence.
Exhibited: Osmosis 08, Long Gallery, Salamanca Arts Centre, Hobart.
